Tonganoxie  is a city in Leavenworth County, Kansas, United States. As of the2010 census, the city population was 4,996. Tonganoxie was platted in 1866. It was named for a local Delaware Indian chief whose name means "shorty" in the Delaware language.Tonganoxie was incorporated as a city in the late 1870s.According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.67 square miles (9.51 km²), of which 3.66 square miles (9.48 km²) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km²) is water.
