Massachusetts, is the most populous state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. As of 2014, Massachusetts was estimated to be the third most densely populated U.S. state, with 839.4 people per square mile, behind New Jersey and Rhode Island. Most Bay State residents live within the Boston Metropolitan Area, also known as Greater Boston which includes Worcester and Greater Lowell. The Springfield Metropolitan Area is also a major center of population.
